Since January 2025 Thailand has been the first country in Southeast Asia with marriage equality, and Bangkok remains the region's biggest queer stage: Silom Soi 2 & 4 for dancing and drag, a huge Pride festival in May/June, and direct flights from Zürich.
Bangkok has been Southeast Asia's biggest queer hub for decades, and since 23 January 2025 there's a historic new argument for it: Thailand is the first country in the region with marriage equality, with the same adoption and inheritance rights as different-sex couples. That doesn't change the streetscape overnight, but it makes the country Asia's most politically relaxed destination for queer travellers right now.
Nightlife concentrates on two parallel alleys in the Silom district: Soi 4 gets going from around 9pm with bars, terraces and drag, before the crowd shifts to Soi 2 around midnight. That's where DJ Station sits — Bangkok's best-known gay club for roughly 30 years, spread over three floors, right next to the high-energy G Bangkok. Entry runs about 150–300 baht on weekdays and 300–400 baht at weekends, usually including a drink.
For Swiss travellers, SWISS flies direct from Zürich to Bangkok several times a week, a flight of just over 11 hours. The 2026 Bangkok Pride Festival ran 28 May – 1 June, with the main parade on 31 May covering roughly 3.8 km through the city centre. For cooler weather, travel between November and February; March to May gets very hot and humid.
Why it's a gay destination
On 23 January 2025 Thailand's marriage equality law took effect, after King Vajiralongkorn signed it into law. The legal definition of marriage changed from 'man and woman' to 'two persons', with equal adoption and inheritance rights. Thailand became the first country in Southeast Asia, and only the third in Asia, to legalise same-sex marriage — a milestone that reinforces Bangkok's long-standing reputation as an open, queer-friendly travel city.
