News from Zürich
View all →Things to do in Zürich
Switzerland's biggest city wears its glamour quietly: a turquoise lake framed by the Alps, a medieval Old Town, and one of the country's most relaxed, confident queer scenes. Zürich is easy to walk, easy to swim in, and surprisingly easy to be yourself in. Here is a short orientation that mixes the postcard sights with the gay city locals actually live in.
Altstadt and the Grossmünster
Wander the medieval Old Town on both banks of the Limmat and climb the Karlsturm, one of the Grossmünster's twin towers, for a panorama over the rooftops, lake and Alps.
Lake Zürich and a boat trip
Stroll the lakeshore promenades and consider a classic boat cruise on the water, with the Alps lining the horizon on a clear day.
Lindt Home of Chocolate
A short trip to Kilchberg on the lake brings you to Lindt's interactive chocolate museum, home to a giant chocolate fountain and a huge shop; booking ahead is wise.
Uetliberg viewpoint
Zürich's local mountain is a short train ride from the centre and rewards you with a sweeping lookout over the city, the lake and the Alpine chain.
Kunsthaus Zürich
Switzerland's largest art museum spans the Middle Ages to the present, a calm cultural anchor on a rainy or reflective afternoon.
Cranberry Bar
In the heart of the Old Town near the Limmat, this long-running gay bar has been a friendly cocktail meeting point for the city's queer scene since the late 1990s.
Seebad Utoquai lido
A historic wooden lakeside bathhouse from the 1890s with a men's section long popular with gay men, plus a cafe and bar; a relaxed way to swim and mingle in summer.
Tips for your visit
- If you visit in June, check the dates for Zürich Pride, the city's big LGBTIQ+ parade and celebration, which fills the city centre with tens of thousands of people.
- The city is very walkable, and its trams and trains make day trips like Uetliberg or Kilchberg quick and simple.
- In warm months locals swim straight from the lakeside badis (public baths); bring a towel and join in.
