Porto
Portugal's second-largest city offers a relaxed, authentic queer scene: compact bars in Bonfim and Baixa, two renowned saunas and a community that makes Porto one of the friendliest destinations on the Iberian Peninsula — and noticeably cheaper than Lisbon.
Porto is not a gay hotspot in the Maspalomas or Mykonos sense — it is something different: an honest, vibrant urban scene that does not dress itself up for tourists. The queer bars cluster around Rua de Cândido dos Reis and Rua da Alegria in Bonfim, with additional spots along the Galerias strip in the city centre. The Bonfim neighbourhood combines a young, progressive population, a large university community and a strong queer presence — visibility here is simply unremarkable.
The centrepiece of the nightlife scene is Fabrik Bar in the Galerias de Paris: Tuesday to Saturday from 6pm, it opens as a cocktail bar before DJs spin pop, house and dance to a crowd that stays until the early hours. Bar of Soap in Bolhão hosts regular drag shows and open-mic nights. The nightlife is compact and fully walkable — Porto is a small city in the best sense.
On the sauna front, Porto has a reputation well beyond its region: Sauna Thermas 205 is the city's largest gay wellness venue (steam room, dry sauna, Jacuzzi, private cabins, bar); Sauna Camões, in operation for over 20 years, rounds out the offer. Both attract visitors from Galicia in Spain and from other European cities.
Porto Pride 2026 runs from 11 to 13 September — a fitting close to Europe's spring and summer pride season. Portugal guarantees LGBTQ+ travellers full legal protection: anti-discrimination law, equal partnership rights and full equality. Politically, the country is one of the most progressive in Europe.
For Swiss travellers, Porto is the logical next step once Lisbon is already known: same quality, fewer tourist crowds, more authentic atmosphere. The historic city centre (Ribeira, Sé, Vila Nova de Gaia) and the Douro river make it one of Europe's most beautiful cities regardless of the gay scene.
