Tel Aviv
The gay capital of the Middle East: 300 sunny days a year, the gay Gordon Beach, a vibrant party scene in Florentin, and one of the world's biggest Pride events — with over 250,000 attendees. A unique counterpoint in the region.
Tel Aviv stands apart: it is the only major city in the Middle East where queer life happens publicly, confidently and without restriction. What other cities in the region cannot show, Tel Aviv displays every summer weekend — couples walking along the beach, bars where nobody looks twice, and a Pride parade drawing over 250,000 attendees.
The city's queer life revolves around two poles. The first is Gordon Beach, specifically section 8 («Gay Beach»): a lively, relaxed meeting point on the Mediterranean, at its most vibrant on summer weekends. The second pole is the Florentin district in the south — creative, slightly grittier than the city centre, home to bars and clubs open into the early hours. Pinky Bar & Lounge on Allenby Street is an easy first stop; Shpagat Lounge offers drag shows and a dance floor. For a calmer vibe, Gan Meir Park has a relaxed atmosphere with an established queer community presence.
Tel Aviv Pride happens every June and is the largest queer event in the Middle East. The parade along the seafront regularly draws over 250,000 people — locals and international visitors from around the world. Israel offers LGBTQ+ travellers legal anti-discrimination protection; Tel Aviv has long been the most open city in its region.
A note for travellers from Switzerland: check the latest Swiss government travel advice (EDA / FDFA) before booking, as the security situation in Israel can vary depending on the time of travel. Tel Aviv itself is the country's most internationally connected and accessible city.
Why it's a gay destination
Israel is the only country in the Middle East with legal anti-discrimination protection for LGBTQ+ people. Same-sex acts were decriminalised in 1988. Tel Aviv has been regarded as the region's most gay-friendly city since the 1990s and is consistently listed among the world's top queer travel destinations.
