Queer Switzerland

Tenerife

Spain· España / Islas Canarias

Tenerife's queer scene centres on the Playa de las Américas promenade: gay clubs around CC Veronicas, mild winters, direct flights from Zurich and an atmosphere where same-sex couples have been an everyday sight for decades.

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and one of the most popular winter destinations for visitors from Switzerland and the German-speaking world. The queer scene is not a niche: it is woven into the general tourist picture of the island's south. Arriving in Playa de las Américas, visitors find the Avenida de las Américas and the CC Veronicas beach strip — an area where same-sex couples on the promenade and in the bars have been a natural part of the scenery for decades.

The heart of the gay scene is in and around CC Veronicas. EXITO Gay Club at CC Veronicas 2 is the largest option: drag shows, DJ nights and crowds that build steadily from midnight. Babylon Disco Gay Pub, also beside the Papagayo Beach Club, offers gogo shows and weekend entertainment. For those starting earlier, the Playaflor Terrace Bar provides a relaxed opening act with sea views. A different format altogether is the Music Hall Tavern, whose long-running drag dinner concept features live vocals, dancers and interactive entertainment — all in English — starting at 7pm and suiting a wide crowd.

For accommodation, Tigotan Lovers & Friends stands out: an adults-only hotel in Playa de las Américas with a rooftop pool and a consistently high LGBTQ+ guest ratio. Generally, the price level in southern Tenerife is comfortable by Swiss standards — drinks, food and accommodation are affordable.

Spain is among the countries in Europe with the strongest legal protections for same-sex couples, with equal marriage in place since 2005. On the Canary Islands, LGBTQ+-friendly attitudes are visibly part of everyday life and the tourism culture.
