Point of interest
Varvakios Central Market
in Athens, Greece
The chaotic, sensory central market on Athinas Street, lined with meat, fish, spice and olive stalls and a few legendary all-night tavernas.
Where it is
On Athinas Street between Monastiraki and Omonia, in the heart of the city centre.
Address: Αθηνάς, 105 51 Athens
What it is
At its centre is the large, animated fish hall, surrounded by meat, cheese and charcuterie stalls; opposite, along Athinas, come the fruit, vegetable, spice and nut sellers. Tucked between the halls are traditional tavernas serving hearty dishes around the clock. For an authentic, unpolished side of Athens, come in the morning.
History
Athens' first covered food market was built in 1886, after a fire in 1884 destroyed the old stalls. It is named after the benefactor Ioannis Varvakis, who funded its construction. It has been the city's central fresh market ever since.
