What it is

Dedicated to the Dutch Golden Age and Dutch art, the Rijksmuseum holds masterpieces such as Rembrandt's "The Night Watch" and Vermeer's "The Milkmaid". Beyond the painting galleries, the library, the garden and the deep collection of decorative arts and history are well worth the visit.

History

The Dutch national museum traces back to a collection founded in The Hague in 1800 and moved to Amsterdam in 1808. The present neo-Gothic and Renaissance-style building, designed by architect Pierre Cuypers, opened in 1885 and reopened in 2013 after a decade-long renovation.
