What it is
The museum holds the world's largest collection of works by Vincent van Gogh, including "Sunflowers", "The Bedroom" and many self-portraits. Its chronological hang tells the story of the artist's life and places him alongside contemporaries such as Gauguin; timed-entry tickets are required given the crowds.
History
The museum opened on 2 June 1973 to house the extensive Van Gogh family collection, which had previously been displayed for years at the Stedelijk Museum. The main building was designed by architect Gerrit Rietveld, with an exhibition wing added in 1999 by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa.
