What it is
The broad green space around the arch invites strolling and lingering and is home to several museums - the Royal Military Museum, the Art & History Museum and the Autoworld classic-car museum. The arch itself offers a view over the quarter.
History
The park was laid out in 1880 for the National Exhibition marking the 50th anniversary of Belgian independence, from which it takes its name. The monumental triple triumphal arch crowned by a quadriga, designed by Gédéon Bordiau and Charles Girault, was only completed in 1905.
