Brazil· São Paulo, Brazil· June

The biggest Pride on Earth: millions take over Avenida Paulista in a single, overwhelming day of trios elétricos and street parties.

About the event

São Paulo's Parade is the largest Pride in the world, listed by Guinness World Records and drawing crowds counted in the millions along Avenida Paulista, the city's grand central artery. Organised since 1997 by the Associação da Parada do Orgulho LGBT+ de São Paulo, it is less a polished spectator event than a vast, joyful occupation of the street: dozens of trios elétricos (sound trucks) roll slowly through the avenue while the whole city seems to march behind them.

The character is unmistakably Brazilian and democratic. Glamour and activism share the same asphalt; political demands ride next to drag, samba, funk and pop. It is loud, hot, packed and good-natured, and it spills into the surrounding bairros for an entire weekend of warm-ups, after-parties and club nights.

It belongs to the rare category of Pride-as-pilgrimage: a date that turns a megacity into a destination. If you want to feel the sheer scale of queer life expressed by a single crowd, this is the one.
