Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara

in Lisboa, Portugal

Viewpoint terrace right on the edge of Príncipe Real/Bairro Alto – sunset with wine and a view across to the castle.

Where it is

In the Bairro Alto district at the top of the Elevador da Glória funicular, above Restauradores.

Address: Rua de São Pedro de Alcântara, 1250-238 Lisbon

What it is

The two-tier terrace, with a fountain, patterned cobbles and two kiosk cafés, offers a wide view over the Baixa across to Castelo de São Jorge. A popular, free spot to linger, especially at sunset. From here it is an easy walk into Bairro Alto and Príncipe Real.

History

The garden was laid out in the 19th century as part of urban improvement works to create a public belvedere. It is dotted with busts of historical and mythological figures such as Minerva and Ulysses, and a tile panel from 1952 names the monuments visible from here. The adjacent Glória funicular has linked the spot to the lower town since 1885.
