What it is
Under one roof, dozens of stalls from renowned Lisbon chefs and restaurants gather around long communal tables. You order from various counters and graze across Portuguese cuisine, from pastéis de nata to fresh fish. Lively and touristy, but a convenient introduction to the city's food scene; a traditional market half still operates alongside.
History
The market hall was built in 1882 and long served as the city's central food market; its distinctive dome dates from a 1930 expansion. After wholesale trade moved out in 2000, the team behind Time Out magazine took over part of the building in 2010. The Time Out Market opened in May 2014 and was the first food hall of its kind in the world.
