Tram 28 (Elétrico 28)

in Lisboa, Portugal

The iconic yellow tram rattles through Graça, Alfama and Baixa in 40 minutes – board early, as Martim Moniz queues get long.

Where it is

Line 28E runs between Martim Moniz and Campo de Ourique (Prazeres), crossing Graça, Alfama, Baixa, Chiado and Estrela.

What it is

With its polished wood interior, brass fittings and signature yellow paint, the Elétrico 28 is a sight in its own right. The rattling ride passes viewpoints and threads through the city's oldest neighbourhoods. Board early in the morning to beat the crowds, and keep an eye out for pickpockets.

History

Lisbon's trams have run since 1914, and the historic "Remodelado" cars from the 1930s still serve line 28 today. These vintage cars are needed because the route's narrow streets, steep climbs and tight bends are unsuitable for modern trams. The line is operated by the municipal transport company Carris.
