Blue Lagoon (Comino)
in Malta, Malta
A shallow, brilliantly turquoise swimming cove on the tiny island of Comino, reached by boat from Malta or Gozo.
Where it is
The Blue Lagoon is a shallow channel between the small island of Comino and the islet of Cominotto, lying between the main islands of Malta and Gozo.
Address: Triq Kemmunett, Għajnsielem
What it is
Turquoise, crystal-clear water over pale sand makes the lagoon the islands' most popular spot for swimming and snorkelling; in calm conditions visibility often reaches 20–30 metres. It is reached by ferry or boat tour, and pre-registration is now required.
History
Comino once served the Knights of St John as an outpost, recalled by the surviving St Mary's Tower of 1618. Today the almost uninhabited island is a nature reserve, and the lagoon is one of Malta's most famous natural attractions.
