What it is
St Julian's and Paceville form Malta's going-out heart, with the highest concentration of bars, clubs and restaurants, and also the core of the gay scene, with several queer bars and saunas. By day the waterfront promenade around Spinola Bay, lined with eateries, is far calmer.
History
Paceville grew up in the 1910s and 1920s, when lawyer Giuseppe Pace built summer residences here. After independence in 1964 the state steered tourism development to the area; with large hotels added in the 1970s, the district became Malta's nightlife capital.
