The mural is in the former Dominican refectory beside the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, at Piazza Santa Maria delle Grazie 2, west of the centre.

Address: Piazza Santa Maria delle Grazie, 20123 Milan

What it is

The monumental work captures the moment Christ announces his betrayal and is regarded as one of the most famous murals in the world. Access is strictly limited to 35 people every 15 minutes, so tickets must be reserved weeks or months in advance.

History

Leonardo da Vinci painted The Last Supper between 1495 and 1498 on the refectory wall, commissioned by Duke Ludovico Sforza. Because of Leonardo's experimental technique the work began to deteriorate early on; the church and painting have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980.
