Navigli
in Milan, Italy
Milan's atmospheric canal district, lined with bars and restaurants for evening aperitivo and home to a celebrated monthly antiques market.
Where it is
The going-out district lies in south-western Milan around the Naviglio Grande and Naviglio Pavese canals, which meet at the Darsena, the old dock basin.
Address: Municipio 6, Milan
What it is
Today bars, restaurants, wine bars and clubs line the waterways, and the district is regarded as the stronghold of the Milanese aperitivo. The monthly antiques market on the last Sunday, small galleries and the canal-side promenades make it appealing day and night, including to a mixed, queer-friendly crowd.
History
Once a poor working-class and port quarter on the medieval shipping canals, the area declined as the waterways lost importance in the 19th century. In recent decades it has seen a spectacular revival, becoming one of the city's liveliest going-out districts.
