Pantheon
in Rome, Italy
Nearly 2,000 years old, this temple still has the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome – timed entry applies.
Where it is
The Pantheon stands in Rome's historic centre on Piazza della Rotonda, a short walk from Piazza Navona.
Address: Piazza della Rotonda, 00186 Rome
What it is
The building has the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome, whose circular opening (the oculus) lets in light and rain; the interior, with its perfect proportions, is overwhelming. Since 2023 entry is ticketed with a timed slot; despite the crowds, a quiet moment under the dome is worth it.
History
The present Pantheon was built by Emperor Hadrian around AD 113–125 on the site of an earlier building by Agrippa. In 609 it was consecrated as the church of Santa Maria ad Martyres, which explains its exceptional state of preservation. It remains a consecrated church and holds, among others, the tomb of the painter Raphael and of Italian kings.
