What it is
With its cobbled lanes, ochre houses, trattorias and many bars, Trastevere is one of Rome's liveliest going-out districts, picturesque by day and buzzing at night. It is popular for strolling, Roman cuisine and nightlife, and has a reputation as gay-friendly.
History
The name comes from the Latin 'trans Tiberim' ('beyond the Tiber'); since antiquity it was home to craftsmen, traders and immigrants. For centuries it was a working-class neighbourhood with a strong identity of its own. At its heart stands the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, one of Rome's oldest churches.
