Trevi Fountain
in Rome, Italy
Rome's most famous Baroque fountain, immortalised by Fellini's "La Dolce Vita" – toss a coin to ensure your return.
Where it is
The Trevi Fountain is in the historic centre on Piazza di Trevi, in the district between the Pantheon and the Quirinal.
Address: Piazza di Trevi, 00187 Rome
What it is
Rome's largest Baroque fountain impresses with its monumental façade and rushing water; by tradition, anyone who throws a coin over their shoulder into the basin will return to Rome. The small square is almost always crowded, so an early-morning or late-evening visit is worth it for calmer photos.
History
The fountain was designed by Nicola Salvi and completed in 1762; it marks the end point of the ancient Aqua Virgo aqueduct. The scene shows the sea god Oceanus on a shell chariot drawn by sea horses and tritons. It became world-famous through Federico Fellini's film 'La Dolce Vita' (1960).
