Council of Europe Warns of Growing Restrictions on Pride Marches

On 17 July 2026, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe’s General Rapporteur on LGBTI people called for action against growing restrictions on Pride marches. She pointed to the continuing obstacles facing Oradea Pride in Romania and to local councils in the United Kingdom withdrawing support from Pride events.

Oradea Pride is scheduled for 25 July. With only days to go, it remained unclear whether local authorities would permit a visible, safe march route. LGBTI organisations and Council of Europe institutions are not asking for preferential treatment, but for the effective application of the right to peaceful assembly.

The warning places these cases in a wider European pattern: when authorities use public order or political neutrality as blanket reasons to limit queer visibility, a formal right can become ineffective in practice. Freedom of expression and peaceful assembly are protected by the European Convention on Human Rights.

This matters directly to Switzerland even though the immediate cases are abroad. Switzerland is also a Council of Europe member and is bound by the same human-rights standards.
