Rainbow Map 2026: what the European benchmark means for Switzerland

ILGA-Europe's Rainbow Map 2026 is not a Pride calendar; it is a policy benchmark. It assesses laws and policies in 49 European countries using 76 criteria, from non-discrimination and family law to asylum, hate crime, legal gender recognition and intersex bodily integrity.
For Swiss readers, the comparison is useful because it pulls the national debate out of its comfort zone. Switzerland has made important progress in recent years, including marriage and adoption rights, but the map also shows that equality is not a single reform moment. Gaps often appear in implementation, protection from violence or recognition of specific lived realities.
A strong article should therefore avoid turning the map into a simple ranking story. The more useful question is: which issues are Swiss organisations working on in 2026, and where can cantons, cities and community services move faster than federal politics?
