Plantin-Moretus Museum

in Antwerp, Belgium

A UNESCO-listed former printing house preserving the world's oldest surviving printing presses and a Renaissance courtyard.

Where it is

The museum is on the Vrijdagmarkt in Antwerp's historic centre, a few minutes south of the Grote Markt.

Address: 22 Vrijdagmarkt, 2000 Antwerp

What it is

On display are two of the oldest surviving printing presses in the world, a precious library holding a Gutenberg Bible, and the firm's historic type and archives. The original living quarters and courtyard garden make a visit feel like a journey into Renaissance Antwerp.

History

Housed in the former home and workshop of the Plantin and Moretus printing dynasty, the business goes back to the publisher Christophe Plantin in the 16th century. In 2005 the complex became the first museum ever to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
