Rubens House (Rubenshuis)

in Antwerp, Belgium

The restored home and studio of Baroque master Peter Paul Rubens, blending an Italianate palazzo with works by the painter and his contemporaries.

Where it is

The Rubenshuis is on the Wapper, a quiet street in central Antwerp, between the Meir and the Schoenmarkt.

What it is

Visitors can discover paintings, the artist's own art collection and the Baroque garden laid out after its historical model. Note: the historic residence is temporarily closed for renovation, but the new visitor centre with the 'Rubens Experience', the library and the garden remains open.

History

The house was the residence and studio of the Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640), who remodelled it in Italian style with a portico and a garden pavilion. Today it is a museum devoted chiefly to the work of Rubens and his contemporaries.
