Neighborhood

Ibiza Town / La Marina

in Ibiza, Spain

Old-town and port area with many bars and evening strolling.

Where it is

The portside quarter of Ibiza Town, at the foot of the Dalt Vila walls and along the harbour, adjoining Sa Penya.

Address: Carrer de Joan Roman, Ibiza

What it is

Narrow lanes full of shops, boutiques, bars and restaurants lead up from the harbour towards the city wall; in summer the evening hippie market adds to the mix. The quarter is ideal for browsing by day and going out at night, blending seamlessly into the queer scene of lower Sa Penya. With its harbour views and Mediterranean bustle, it is one of the liveliest parts of Ibiza Town.

History

Like neighbouring Sa Penya, La Marina grew out of the medieval port activity, when merchants, sailors and dock workers settled here. Carrer de la Mare de Déu still marks the boundary between the two quarters. From an old seafaring and trading district it gradually became the commercial and social heart of the city.
