History
The venue began in 1954, when the farmer and carpenter Joan Marí opened a bar with a dance hall there; in the 1970s its garden became a gathering place for hippies and their jam sessions. The market itself started on Valentine's Day 1985 with just five stalls and grew over the following decades into an institution. Today it has more than 200 stalls and is regarded as one of the most famous hippie markets in the world.
