Nightlife areas with bars, music and late evenings.
Where it is
Two adjacent nightlife districts: Bairro Alto on the hill and the lower-lying Cais do Sodré on the Tagus waterfront, linked by the Bica funicular.
Address: Bairro Alto, Lisbon
What it is
In Bairro Alto, tiny bars line narrow lanes where in summer the crowd drinks out on the street; around Pink Street in Cais do Sodré the night moves on to the clubs. This is also home to key queer nightlife addresses, including Club Finalmente, open since 1976. Lively, mixed and going until the early hours.
History
Bairro Alto has long been Lisbon's bohemian going-out quarter. Cais do Sodré was once a port and red-light district where sailors filled the bars around Rua Nova do Carvalho; from 2009 the area was regenerated and the street painted pink, becoming today's "Pink Street". Both districts are now central to Lisbon nightlife.
