The museum is in the Tria Pigadia quarter in the centre of Chora (Mykonos Town), in a 19th-century Mykonian townhouse.

What it is
The museum is devoted to the history of Greek merchant shipping in the Aegean, showing ship models from the pre-Minoan era to the early modern period, sea charts, engravings, instruments and coins with nautical themes. Its small garden holds historic exhibits such as the Armenistis lighthouse mechanism (1890) and restored sailing ships.
History
The Aegean Maritime Museum was founded in 1983 by the Mykonian Georgios Drakopoulos and opened to the public in 1985. In 1987 Drakopoulos received an award from the Academy of Athens for establishing the museum. It is housed in the former home of captain Nikolaos Sourmelis.
