in Paris, France

The famous avenue runs up to the Arc de Triomphe, whose rooftop terrace reveals the twelve avenues radiating out star-like below.

Where it is

The Avenue des Champs-Élysées runs through the 8th arrondissement from Place de la Concorde to Place Charles-de-Gaulle, where the Arc de Triomphe stands at the centre of the star-shaped square.

Address: Avenue des Champs-Élysées, 75008 Paris

What it is

The roughly two-kilometre avenue is lined with flagship stores, cinemas and cafés and ends at the monumental Arc de Triomphe. A rooftop terrace on the arch gives views over the twelve avenues radiating like a star. The Champs-Élysées hosts the Bastille Day parade and New Year's Eve celebrations.

History

Napoleon commissioned the Arc de Triomphe in 1806 to honour the armies of the empire; after a long construction it was completed in 1836. Beneath the arch lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, with its eternal flame, since 1921.
