What it is
The roughly two-kilometre avenue is lined with flagship stores, cinemas and cafés and ends at the monumental Arc de Triomphe. A rooftop terrace on the arch gives views over the twelve avenues radiating like a star. The Champs-Élysées hosts the Bastille Day parade and New Year's Eve celebrations.
History
Napoleon commissioned the Arc de Triomphe in 1806 to honour the armies of the empire; after a long construction it was completed in 1836. Beneath the arch lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, with its eternal flame, since 1921.
