Musée d'Orsay

in Paris, France

Set in a former railway station on the Seine, it holds the world's finest collection of Impressionist masterpieces by Monet, Van Gogh and Renoir.

Where it is

The museum occupies the former Gare d'Orsay railway station in the 7th arrondissement on the Left Bank of the Seine, opposite the Tuileries Garden.

Address: 1 Rue de la Légion d'Honneur, 75007 Paris

What it is

The Orsay holds the world's richest collection of Impressionist and post-Impressionist painting, with works by Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, Degas and Cézanne beneath the great station clock. Owing to a major renovation, a timed reservation is mandatory from March 2026 to summer 2028.

History

The Gare d'Orsay was built for the 1900 World's Fair and later closed because its platforms had grown too short. Reopened as a museum in 1986, the building now holds French art from 1848 to 1914, bridging the period after the Louvre.
