Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris

in Paris, France

The Gothic cathedral on the Île de la Cité was restored after the 2019 fire and reopened in late 2024. The interior is free to visit.

Where it is

The cathedral stands on the Île de la Cité in the 4th arrondissement, at the geographic heart of Paris on the Seine.

Address: 6 Notre-Dame Forecourt - John Paul II Square, 75004 Paris

What it is

Famed for its flying buttresses, rose windows and restored interior, the cathedral is free to enter, though a free reservation is recommended given the crowds. The towers, with their gargoyles and panoramic views, are managed separately by the Centre des monuments nationaux.

History

Construction of the Gothic cathedral began in 1163 and stretched over roughly two centuries. A devastating fire destroyed its roof and spire on 15 April 2019; after a major restoration, Notre-Dame reopened to the public in December 2024.
