Point of interest

Plaza de la Virgen

in Valencia, Spain

One of the old town's most atmospheric squares, framed by the Basilica and cathedral, with a fountain symbolising the Turia and its eight irrigation canals.

Where it is

In the heart of the old town, behind the cathedral, next to the basilica of the Virgen de los Desamparados and the Palau de la Generalitat.

Address: Ciutat Vella, Valencia

What it is

One of the city's most beautiful squares, with the reclining fountain representing the river Turia and its eight irrigation canals, ringed by cafés with terraces. A lively meeting point, especially in the evening, and a good starting place for a walk through the old town.

History

The square stands over the forum of Roman Valentia and was for centuries the religious and civic centre of the city. At the cathedral's Puerta de los Apóstoles the Water Tribunal (Tribunal de las Aguas) meets every Thursday, recognised in 2009 as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
