Brighton Naturist Beach (Cliff Bathing Beach / Black Rock)
in Brighton, United Kingdom
Located east of Kemptown towards the Marina, opened in 1980 as Britain's first public nudist beach and especially popular with gay men; pebbly, so bring water shoes.
Where it is
The naturist beach is at the eastern end of the city beach below Madeira Drive, about a mile east of the Palace Pier towards the marina, near Black Rock.
What it is
The roughly 200-metre pebble beach is designated for nudity and has always been especially popular with the LGBTQ community. The mood is relaxed and friendly, and on warm days it is the gathering spot for anyone who wants to sunbathe topless or fully nude.
History
Brighton made history when Britain's first public naturist beach opened here on 1 April 1980, officially named Cliff Bathing Beach. It followed a national campaign by British Naturism, and its opening caused fierce controversy in the council at the time.
