Queer Switzerland
United Kingdom· Europa

Brighton is Britain's classic queer seaside city: Kemptown, St James's Street, Pride and a community that feels like everyday life, not only party.

Kemptown and St James's Street bring bars, clubs, drag, cafes and community places close together; the beach and promenade mix weekend visitors, students, families and London day-trippers. Brighton & Hove Pride in August is huge, but Trans Pride, arts venues and local bars keep the city relevant beyond that weekend.

Its reputation as Britain's queer capital comes from its history as seaside resort, escape space and creative city. Since the 1970s, Pride has become part of that identity. From Switzerland, Brighton works especially well as a London combination or as a summer weekend with more air and less big-city pressure.

Why it's a gay destination

Brighton has long been called the UK's queer capital, and that reputation rests on two centuries of real history rather than marketing. Men were first drawn here in numbers during the Napoleonic Wars, when the seaside town was packed with garrisoned soldiers; the opening of the London and Brighton Railway in 1841 then turned it into a discreet day-trip destination where Londoners could explore their sexuality away from the capital's gaze. By the 1930s the first gay and lesbian pubs had taken root. The 2001 census recorded the highest proportion of same-sex households in the UK, and Brighton Pride is now Britain's biggest, drawing around half a million people. That liberal, slightly eccentric seaside spirit, where being different is simply part of the place, still defines the city.

  • Brighton Palace PierThe city's most famous image: a long pleasure pier over the sea packed with funfair rides, amusement arcades, fish and chips and endless lights. Free to walk on, and best at sunset.
  • The LanesA maze of narrow alleyways with more than 200 independent shops, antique dealers, cafés and historic pubs. The most charming corner of the centre for aimless wandering.
  • North LaineMore colourful and alternative than the Lanes: vintage fashion, record shops, bakeries and the legendary Snoopers Paradise flea market. The biggest cluster of independent retailers on England's south coast.
  • Brighton i360A glass viewing pod that rises 137m above the beach on a slender mast. On clear days the view stretches over the South Downs to the Isle of Wight, and there is a Sky Bar at the top.

  • Brighton MarinaA large marina east of the city with shops, restaurants, a cinema and bowling. A pleasant walk along the pontoons and the gateway to the nearby naturist beach.
  • Brighton Museum & Art GallerySet in the Pavilion gardens, the city museum covers art, fashion and design and houses one of the UK's first permanent displays on local queer history. A good rainy-day option.

Beaches

  • Brighton Naturist Beach (Cliff Bathing Beach, Kemp Town)Nudist / FKKThe UK's first official public naturist beach, opened on 1 April 1980. A shingle beach at the eastern end of the Kemp Town promenade, about a mile east of the pier towards the Marina, and especially popular with the gay community.
