Devil's Dyke

in Brighton, United Kingdom

A dramatic dry valley in the South Downs National Park about 8 km north of the city, with panoramic views reaching the Isle of Wight on clear days.

Where it is

Devil's Dyke lies about five miles north of Brighton in the South Downs National Park, reached via the A27 and, in summer, by bus.

Address: Devil's Dyke Road, BN1 8AX Brighton

What it is

From the ridge there are sweeping panoramas over the South Downs and the Weald. The area is popular for walking, kite flying and paragliding, and a pub with a terrace offers refreshment with a view.

History

The valley, nearly a mile long, is the longest, deepest and widest dry valley in Britain and, according to science, formed at the end of the last ice age over 10,000 years ago. Legend says the Devil dug the chasm to flood the villages of the Weald. The site is now cared for by the National Trust.
