Dünen von Maspalomas
in Maspalomas (Gran Canaria), Spain
Protected dune reserve with a well-known gay beach zone near kiosk 7.
Where it is
The dune area stretches along the southern tip of Gran Canaria between Playa del Inglés and the Maspalomas lighthouse and shapes the entire surrounding stretch of coast.
What it is
The dune area is the focus of the region's beach and outdoor life, with vast stretches of sand, the gay beach section around kiosk 7 and extensive nudist and cruising zones. Walks through the dunes at sunrise and sunset are among the most memorable experiences of a stay in the south.
History
The shifting dunes are the natural symbol of the south and were protected in 1994 as part of the Reserva Natural Especial. The major tourism area of Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas grew up around them from the 1960s and 1970s onwards.
