Maspalomas, on the sunny southern tip of Gran Canaria, is one of Europe's great gay winter-sun destinations - warm all year round. The heart of the scene is the Yumbo Centrum in Playa del Inglés, an open-air shopping complex from the 1980s that dozes through the day and turns into a vertical party district after dark: more than 200 businesses, of which 30-plus are gay bars, cabaret terraces, dance clubs and cruising venues stacked across several floors. Most places charge no entry, so you simply drift from terrace to terrace.
The night has a clear arc. On the lower levels, cabaret and show bars such as Mykonos start early with drag and music; higher up the dance clubs fill around midnight - Mantrix is the best-known main floor, with DJs and lasers - while cruisier spots like the Adonis Bar run into the small hours. By day, life moves to the beach and to the pools of the many gay bungalow resorts clustered around the Yumbo. Plenty of travellers deliberately stay in Playa del Inglés precisely because everything is walkable.
Beyond the party, Maspalomas is simply a first-rate beach resort: kilometres of sand, the famous dunes as a natural backdrop, and the calmer, more upscale Meloneras with its lighthouse promenade for quieter days. That blend of reliable climate, short distances and one of the largest permanent gay infrastructures in Europe is exactly what makes it so popular with Swiss travellers through the winter.
Why it's a gay destination
Maspalomas became a gay mecca largely thanks to the Yumbo Centrum, which opened in 1982. Over the following years gay bars and venues gradually moved into the complex until it grew into the undisputed centre of Gran Canaria's LGBT scene - today home to well over 200 businesses. In parallel, a dense cluster of gay bungalow resorts grew up around the Yumbo, capitalising on the year-round mild climate and turning Maspalomas into a dependable winter destination, especially for northern Europeans.
Its standing as a Pride destination came later: today's Maspalomas Pride celebrates its 25th edition in 2026 and is one of the first big Prides of the European spring season. It is complemented by Winter Pride each November, one of Europe's largest LGBTQ+ winter events - two festivals that turn the resort into an international gathering point twice a year.
