Point of interest
Naschmarkt
in Vienna, Austria
Vienna's most famous market — stalls, mezze and brunch spots — and the geographic heart of the queer sixth district.
Where it is
Along the Wienzeile between Karlsplatz and Kettenbrückengasse, on the border between the 4th district of Wieden and the 6th district of Mariahilf.
Address: Laimgrube, Vienna
What it is
Around 130 stalls offer spices, fruit, cheese, seafood and international cuisine, interspersed with eateries and bars that turn into a meeting point in the evenings. On Saturdays the well-known flea market takes place at the western end. The Naschmarkt sits right beside the city's queer heart around Mariahilf.
History
The market dates back to the late 18th century and grew, over the partly vaulted Wien river, into Vienna's largest inner-city market. Originally trading mainly in milk and fruit, its range today reflects the city's culinary diversity.
