History
The Gothic cathedral of St. Stephen stands on the site of a Romanesque predecessor; its distinctive south tower was completed in 1433. A bishop's seat since 1469, it is regarded as the landmark of Vienna and a national shrine of Austria. In April 1945 a fire destroyed the roof and parts of the interior, which were rebuilt in the post-war years.
