Address: Burggasse, 1070 Vienna
What it is
The grounds are home to the Leopold Museum with the largest Schiele collection, the mumok for modern art and the Kunsthalle Wien. The freely accessible courtyards with their colourful lounge furniture are a popular spot to linger, dotted with cafés, bars and shops.
History
The site grew out of the imperial court stables designed in 1725 by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. After years of planning it opened in 2001 as one of the world's largest cultural districts, combining historic fabric with modern museum architecture.
