Where it is

On the Donauinsel along the Neue Donau in the 22nd district, around an old Danube branch in the interior of the island; reached on foot or by bike via the riverside paths.

Address: Katastralgemeinde Landjägermeisteramt, Vienna

What it is

Toter Grund lies within a protected natural area of reeds, small bays and hidden clearings; it is a nudist and cruising spot frequented above all by gay men. The season starts with the first warm days of spring; getting there and access take some time along cycle and foot paths.

History

The area formed as the remnant water of an old Danube branch left behind when the Donauinsel and flood protection were built in the 1970s and 80s. Over the years its secluded setting established itself as a well-known meeting point for Vienna's gay nudist scene.
