New to Bern, or looking for other queer people for the first time? Here is what hab queer bern, Kunterbunt, Checkpoint Bern, the City and the LGBTIQ-Helpline currently offer: regular meet-ups (Stammtisch), groups, a youth group, counselling and police accompaniment.

If you are new to Bern, looking for company after a move, or only now ready to meet other queer people, the question is nearly always the same: where do you go on your own? In Bern there is no single address where someone is always there. As we reported in our piece on the association for a queer meeting space, a permanent, low-threshold place to drop in is still something to be created. Until then the groups meet at changing venues such as Villa Bernau, LO31 or restaurants. This guide therefore collects what exists today: recurring meet-ups, counselling and first points of contact. It draws on the websites of hab queer bern, the youth group Kunterbunt, the City of Bern, Checkpoint Bern and the LGBTIQ-Helpline, read on 4 November 2026.

Who is behind most of the meet-ups

hab queer bern is an LGBTIQ+ organisation in Bern. Its stated aim is full legal and social equality for LGBTIQ+ people, and it also wants to encourage people to live openly and confidently in every area of life. Under «Angebote» (offers) it lists counselling and accompaniment, social activities, leisure activities, the youth group Kunterbunt, a library, publications, a policy working group and a newsletter. The postal address is «hab queer bern, 3000 Bern», the email info@habqueerbern.ch. The website carries no publication date; it shows events from 4 November 2026 into February 2027.

The easiest way in

According to the website, the newsletter comes out every 14 days with dates, news and regional information. Past issues are archived at habdigest.beehiiv.com. If you are not ready to walk into an evening yet, you can read along and see which formats exist. A membership exists too: according to hab the annual fee is CHF 140, reduced CHF 70 (for apprentices, students, AHV/IV recipients and people on low incomes, among others); further categories are listed on the «Mitglied werden» page. You do not have to join to start: hab explicitly invites people to get to know the association without obligation at a queer eat&meet evening. Whether other formats are open to non-members, a short email beforehand will settle.

Recurring meet-ups from November 2026 to February 2027

The details below come from the event list, the entries for the individual events, the sub-page «Soziale Aktivitäten» (social activities) and hab's newsletter of 25 October 2026. Re-check dates, times and registration in the event list on habqueerbern.ch before you go, as changes are possible.

«…eifach Midwuch» takes place on the first Wednesday of the month at Villa Bernau (Seftigenstrasse 243, Wabern, municipality of Köniz); the next dates are 4 November and 2 December 2026. According to hab's newsletter, card games (Jassen) start at 17:00, the Bernau bar opens at 18:00 and there is a dinner break («Znacht») around 18:30; dinner costs at least CHF 15, drinks not included. Registering for dinner is requested; registration closes at 23:59 the day before, and every registration is binding. You can also join later without registering. For the 2 December event the times contradict each other (listing from 18:00, description saying 19:30), so ask first if you want the main part of the evening. The page names no target group. The villa is outside the city centre, so plan your journey with the timetable.

The Stammtisch (a regular get-together around a table, often in a restaurant) «der fröhliche Mittwoch» is announced for Wednesday 11 November from 18:30 at Restaurant Weissenbühl (Chutzenstrasse 30, Bern). In principle no registration is needed. The entry addresses «Junggebliebene» (people young at heart) and names conversation, politics and philosophy as topics.

The «Nachmittagstreff schwul 60 plusminus» is for gay men around 60 and meets every 14 days on a Friday from 14:00 to 17:00: 13 and 27 November and, per the sub-page, 11 December, at Restaurant Cavallo Star, Bubenbergplatz 8. If you want to eat beforehand you can come from 12:30; the kitchen closes at 14:00 at the latest and you pay for your own meal. No registration is needed. Questions go to nachmittagstreff@habqueerbern.ch.

The «queer eat&meet mit Stammtisch» is, according to hab, the meeting point for everyone in the queer community; it runs on Wednesday evenings at Villa Bernau, with the next dates on 18 November 2026, 16 December 2026 and 20 January 2027. Each evening includes a Stammtisch aimed specifically at trans and intersex people. The bar opens at 18:30 and the library is open. On 18 November dinner starts around 19:00 (a fondue, according to the newsletter); for 16 December and 20 January the event list gives 19:30 as the dinner start, with the menu still open and due to appear in the newsletter. The page lists no price. You register through the entry in the event list: registration closes at 23:59 the day before, and every registration is binding. The discussion group for intersex people meets during those evenings, from 18:00 to 19:00, and is described as «offen für Jemensch» (open to anyone interested); you can sign up via eat&meet or write directly to urs.sager@habqueerbern.ch (Urs Vanessa Sager).

The discussion group for gay and bi men meets monthly on a Thursday from 18:50 to 20:50 at Villa Bernau, led by Walter Lehmann. The dates named are 19 November and 10 December 2026, then 21 January and 18 February 2027. New participants should email the leader beforehand: schwule-gespraechsgruppe@habqueerbern.ch. The Bi-Pan group usually meets on the 13th of the month, normally at a restaurant in Bern; contact: bi-pan@habqueerbern.ch.

There are also single events: a queer church service on Sunday 8 November at the Heiliggeistkirche (Spitalgasse 44), currently listed as «Save the date». The networking apéro for the LGBTIQ region of Bern on Friday 20 November 2026 at 18:00 is, according to the entry, for invited LGBTIQ organisations; no venue is shown and nothing confirms that private individuals are admitted. We therefore recommend it as an option for coming alone only after hab confirms. Outside hab, the 30th Queersicht film festival opens on 5 November; according to the festival, the anniversary party «Party & Best-of Rosa Brille» is on 7 November at the Dachstock of the Reitschule.

For young people: Kunterbunt

The youth group Kunterbunt is for people aged 15 to 30, including those who are still unsure about their identity; people of all gender identities are welcome. According to the group's own website it meets on the first Wednesday and third Monday of each month from 18:30 to 21:00 at LO31, Lorrainestrasse 31, Bern; per hab's newsletter that means 4 and 16 in November. Contact: info@kunterbunt-bern.ch. hab's sub-page still names the Toj-Treff PUNKT 12 and «18:00 to about 21:00»; we follow Kunterbunt's own, more recent information. The City of Bern also lists «Du bist Du», peer-to-peer counselling on sexual or romantic orientation and gender identity for young people (info@du-bist-du.ch), and the number 147 for children and young people, free and open around the clock.

Counselling: who helps with what

According to hab, Checkpoint Bern (Schwarztorstrasse 11, 3007 Bern, 031 390 36 46) offers professional psychological and psychosocial counselling for lesbian, gay, bisexual and queer people, young people and adults, plus relatives and professionals. It is free, limited to three sessions and by appointment. Trans* counselling is booked through an online calendar.

hab's volunteers («Wir begleiten dich») reply within 48 hours according to the site and treat what you tell them confidentially. Their support ends where psychological or medical help is needed; they then point you onward. They state clearly that they are not a dating service. For legal questions hab refers to Pink Cross. According to Pink Cross, the first consultation there is free for members; the page does not say how it works for others, and the lawyers will tell you about any further costs. Ask before the appointment.

You can reach the LGBTIQ-Helpline on 0800 133 133, Monday to Friday, 7 to 9 pm, by phone or chat; emails are answered within 72 hours (Mon–Fri), so do not expect a reply at weekends. The service is free, can be anonymous and is run by peer counsellors who say they are not professionals but are bound by confidentiality. It is not an emergency service.

In an acute crisis the City of Bern points to Die Dargebotene Hand, 143, open around the clock, for conversation and advice. In English there is Heart2Heart on 0800 143 000, by its own account from 6 to 11 pm; only 143 is available around the clock. 143 is support in conversation, not an intervention: in immediate danger call the police (117 or 112), and for a medical emergency 144.

If something has happened

With «Wir begleiten dich zur Polizei», hab offers accompaniment when filing a report, developed with the Bern cantonal police. It is free and voluntary, open to every queer person, including when the incident was long ago or you are unsure whether to report. You choose one of three companions and agree a non-binding preliminary talk. The accompaniment does not take over the police procedure; that remains the police's responsibility.

On its «Beratungsangebote» page, the City of Bern lists, among others, the Office for Gender Equality (discrimination based on sex, gender identity or sexual orientation; 031 321 62 99; gleichstellung@bern.ch; free and confidential) and the victim support centre Opferhilfe Bern (031 370 30 70) for people who experience or have experienced physical, sexual or psychological violence. Two services on sexualised violence have a narrower audience: the Inselspital's Bernese Model offers medical care and evidence collection for women, girls and other people with a vulva/vagina from age 14 (031 632 12 60 in office hours, 031 632 10 10 outside them). According to the City, Lantana (031 313 14 00) is for women, children and young people who have experienced sexualised violence, and is also open to queer people who identify as female or are non-binary; among other things it runs discussion groups for cis women, trans, inter and non-binary people. It is not meant as a general entry point for adult men; for them Opferhilfe Bern is the broader route. For how to document an incident, see our guide to reporting hate crimes.

Limits of this guide

We did not attend any of these events and do not describe their atmosphere, only what the organisers publish. Not every detail is complete or consistent: the venue of the networking apéro is missing, the December «…eifach Midwuch» start times contradict each other, and hab's sub-page on Kunterbunt differs from the group's own site. The hab site is undated and dates can change. We did not find a house with daily opening hours where you can simply walk in in the sources we used; that does not mean there are no fixed places, since Villa Bernau and LO31 are regular meeting points. This article is not medical or legal advice.
