The city's Gothic icon and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, begun in 1248 and only completed in 1880. With around four million visitors a year it is Germany's most-visited landmark; the fit can climb the 533 steps up the south tower.
Where it is
The cathedral rises on Roncalliplatz in the heart of the Old Town, right beside the main railway station on the west bank of the Rhine.

Inside, the medieval stained glass, the Shrine of the Three Kings and Gerhard Richter's modern south transept window are the highlights. Climbing the 533 steps of the south tower rewards you with a sweeping view over the city and the Rhine. Note: from 1 July 2026 a ticket is required to visit.
History
Work on this Gothic cathedral began in 1248, stalled around 1560, and was only completed in 1880 following the original medieval plans. It houses the Shrine of the Three Kings and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. With twin spires of 157 metres, it is Germany's most visited landmark.
