Cologne is one of Germany's most open queer cities, with a dense scene around Schaafenstrasse/Rudolfplatz and a major CSD. For Swiss travellers it works for Pride, Christmas markets plus nightlife, or a long weekend on the Rhine.

In practical terms: Cologne Pride / CSD in July with a major parade and street festival. Bar-hopping around Schaafenstrasse. Cathedral, Rhine promenade and museums by day. Strong seasonal mix of Carnival, Pride and Christmas markets. Cologne is the social Rhineland version of Germany's gay scene: bars around Rudolfplatz, Heumarkt and the old town, major CSD energy, bear and pub culture. Carnival, media and everyday sociability make the city especially easy to enter.

Why it's a gay destination

Cologne is one of Europe's oldest and most matter-of-fact queer cities. A visible gay bar culture already existed here in the 1920s, and the scene rebuilt itself remarkably fast after the devastation of the Second World War. The first Christopher Street Day marched through the city in 1981, and today ColognePride is Germany's biggest Pride after Berlin, drawing up to 1.5 million people over the demonstration weekend. The real heart beats around Rudolfplatz: along Schaafenstraße and the surrounding lanes, the legendary 'Bermuda Triangle' has taken shape since the 1970s — a tight cluster of bars where, on a warm weekend, the crowd spills straight out onto the pavement. What sets Cologne apart is its tone: easy, unpretentious, Rhenish-warm, with none of the velvet-rope posturing of bigger scenes.
