Why it's a gay destination
Cologne is one of Europe's oldest and most matter-of-fact queer cities. A visible gay bar culture already existed here in the 1920s, and the scene rebuilt itself remarkably fast after the devastation of the Second World War. The first Christopher Street Day marched through the city in 1981, and today ColognePride is Germany's biggest Pride after Berlin, drawing up to 1.5 million people over the demonstration weekend. The real heart beats around Rudolfplatz: along Schaafenstraße and the surrounding lanes, the legendary 'Bermuda Triangle' has taken shape since the 1970s — a tight cluster of bars where, on a warm weekend, the crowd spills straight out onto the pavement. What sets Cologne apart is its tone: easy, unpretentious, Rhenish-warm, with none of the velvet-rope posturing of bigger scenes.

Points of interest
Kölner Dom (Cologne Cathedral) — The city's Gothic icon and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, begun in 1248 and only completed in 1880. With around four million visitors a year it is Germany's most-visited landmark; the fit can climb the 533 steps up the south tower.
Hohenzollernbrücke (Hohenzollern Bridge) — Germany's most famous railway bridge and the classic photo motif — cathedral behind, Rhine below. Since 2008 tens of thousands of love-locks have clung to its railings.
Altstadt & Rheinpanorama (Old Town & Rhine waterfront) — Cobblestones, colourful gabled houses and brewhouses around Alter Markt and Heumarkt. From the riverbank the cathedral, the Romanesque Great St. Martin church and the town-hall tower form the world-famous Rhine panorama.
Museum Ludwig — Right beside the cathedral: one of Germany's most important modern-art collections, strong in Pop Art, German Expressionism, photography and a major Picasso holding. Founded in 1976 by the Ludwig couple's donation.
Römisch-Germanisches Museum (Romano-Germanic Museum) — Cologne was the major Roman city of Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium. The museum preserves the famous Dionysus mosaic in its original spot. Under renovation, it currently shows highlights at the Belgian House (Cäcilienstraße); reopening is planned for 2026.
KölnTriangle Panorama — On the right bank of the Rhine, this roughly 100-metre-high glass-walled observation deck gives the best 360-degree view over the cathedral and Old Town — best at sunset.
Eau de Cologne 4711 (Glockengasse) — Birthplace of the perfume that gave the city its French name. The flagship house at Glockengasse 4711 is today a shop and small experience centre devoted to the story of 'eau de Cologne'.

- Heavenue — Gay Christmas MarketNov-Dec 2026 (Friesenplatz)One of Germany's most important queer Christmas markets, at Friesenplatz: a pop-art winter wonderland with colourful stalls, mulled wine and an evening programme. Exact 2026 dates are announced closer to the season.
