Römisch-Germanisches Museum (Romano-Germanic Museum)

Cologne was the major Roman city of Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium. The museum preserves the famous Dionysus mosaic in its original spot. Under renovation, it currently shows highlights at the Belgian House (Cäcilienstraße); reopening is planned for 2026.

The main building stands on Roncalliplatz next to the cathedral; during renovation the museum is currently housed in the Belgisches Haus at Cäcilienstraße 46 near Neumarkt.

What it is
Highlights include the great Dionysus mosaic, the Poblicius funerary monument and the world's largest collection of Roman glass. The displays vividly evoke everyday life in Roman Cologne through jewellery, ceramics and inscriptions. During the renovation, selected pieces are on view at the Belgisches Haus.
History
Founded in 1946, the museum reopened in 1974 in its distinctive building on Roncalliplatz, erected over the Roman Dionysus mosaic. It preserves Cologne's archaeological heritage from the Roman city of Colonia to the early Middle Ages. The main building has been closed since 2018 for a major renovation.
