What it is
Today the area invites strolling along restored canals, iron railway viaducts, warehouses and waterways, complemented by waterside bars and restaurants. A reconstruction of the Roman fort can be seen. Its calm, water-laced atmosphere contrasts with the busy centre.
History
Castlefield is the site of the Roman fort of Mamucium, from which Manchester grew, and later an industrial hub of canals and warehouses. The Bridgewater Canal, one of the Industrial Revolution's earliest canals, reached its terminus here in 1761. In 1982 the area was designated Britain's first Urban Heritage Park.
