Address: Northern Quarter, Manchester
What it is
Today the Northern Quarter is known for independent shops, record stores, vintage boutiques, cafés, bars and street art. The atmosphere is alternative and bohemian, perfect for wandering. It is one of Manchester's liveliest areas for nightlife and independent culture.
History
The area around Oldham Street was a commercial and market district in the 19th and early 20th centuries, later declining as retail moved away. From the 1990s it was gradually regenerated into the city's creative, independent heart. The name Northern Quarter took hold in this period as a marketing term.
