Science and Industry Museum

in Manchester, United Kingdom

Set in the world's oldest surviving passenger railway station, it traces Manchester's role in industry and computing, including replicas linked to the first stored-program computer.

Where it is

The museum sits on Liverpool Road in the Castlefield district, a few minutes from the Deansgate-Castlefield Metrolink stop.

Address: Liverpool Road, M3 4FP Manchester

What it is

Spread over a large site of historic halls, the museum displays working steam engines, locomotives and galleries on textiles and science. Entry is free, though some special exhibitions may charge. Major construction works mean some buildings are currently closed, but there is still plenty to see.

History

The museum stands partly on the site of Liverpool Road Station, the world's oldest surviving passenger railway station, opened in 1830 as the terminus of the first inter-city railway. It tells some 250 years of Manchester's story of innovation, from the cotton industry to computing. It is now part of the Science Museum Group.
