Queer Switzerland

Manchester is northern England's alternative to London: Canal Street, the Gay Village, club culture, music and activist history.

Manchester is interesting not because of postcard romance, but because of scene, music and history. Canal Street and the Gay Village remain the most visible entry point with bars, clubs, hotels and late weekends; the Northern Quarter and Ancoats add food, music and younger culture. Pride structures have changed, so check current local dates.

Its queer importance comes from industrial culture, labour history, HIV/AIDS activism, TV visibility and the Gay Village since the 1990s. Manchester is less polished than Brighton or London, but very specific. From Switzerland, it works when music, clubs, football, industrial and community history can sit together.

Why it's a gay destination

Manchester is northern England's gay capital, and the heart of that identity is Canal Street, running alongside the Rochdale Canal. The old cotton-trade warehouses fell into decline from the 1950s and the area became a red-light district; the New Union pub soon drew gay men too, who found relative safety there under cover of the sex workers. After the partial decriminalisation of 1967 a cluster of queer venues took root, and the 1990 opening of the bar Manto sparked the modern Gay Village we know today, now billed as Europe's largest. Manchester's first Pride, in 1985, began as a small charity event to support people living with HIV and AIDS.
