Point of interest
Cours Saleya
in Nice, France
The lively market street in the Old Town, famous for its flower and produce market by day and its restaurants and bars by night.
Where it is
This long open square sits in the heart of the Old Town (Vieux Nice), one block in from and parallel to the Promenade des Anglais.
Address: Vieux Nice, Nice
What it is
Cours Saleya is the liveliest stage of the Old Town: from Tuesday to Sunday the famous flower, fruit and vegetable market fills it with colour and scent, while on Mondays it gives way to an antiques and flea market. All around, sunny terraces, restaurants and stalls of the local socca specialty invite you to linger.
History
The name recalls the salt (sal) once stored here. From 1861 the market became the commercial heart of the city, and in 1897 Nice opened the world's first wholesale cut-flower market; the floats of the Nice Carnival once paraded from here too.
